Most of the housing across this service area went up between 1938 and 1993, with the median build year landing around 1970, and that pattern holds across the 24 communities we work in, not just in town. A cable installed on a garage door in the 1960s or 70s was galvanized to a standard that was fine for its time, but forty to sixty years of use wears the zinc coating thin, and once that coating's gone the steel underneath starts to rust and fray a lot faster.
The cold-severe climate band this area sits in makes that wear worse. Cables go through repeated freeze-thaw cycles every winter, and condensation that collects in an unheated garage settles right into the cable strands and drum groove. Salt and grit tracked in on tires doesn't help either.
